What exactly is British citizenship?

British citizenship gives you the right to live and work in the UK permanently, without any immigration restrictions.

Who is automatically a British citizen?

There are several ways someone can automatically become a British citizen, including:

By birth: A child born in the UK to a parent who is a British citizen or settled in the UK is automatically a British citizen by birth.

By descent: A person born outside the UK to a parent who is a British citizen otherwise than by descent (for example, by being born in the UK, or having a parent who was born in the UK) may automatically be a British citizen by descent.

By adoption: A child adopted by a British citizen automatically becomes a British citizen.

By registration: In certain circumstances, individuals can apply to register as a British citizen. For example, a person who has lived in the UK for a certain period of time or has a parent who has become a British citizen may be eligible for registration.

It's important to note that the rules regarding British citizenship can be complex and may depend on individual circumstances. If you have any questions or concerns about your own citizenship status, book an online consultation with us.

British Citizenship FAQs

  • How long does the British citizenship application process take?

    The Home Office says that the typical British citizenship timeline is around six months from the date of application to receive a decision. Based on our experience, it can take an average of two months for applications that we have submitted to be completed. But British citizenship processing times do vary.

  • Can I hold dual citizenship with the UK?

    Yes, in most cases, it is possible to hold dual citizenship with the UK. However, you should check the laws of your home country to ensure that it allows dual citizenship.

  • Do I need to give up my current nationality to become a British citizen?

    In many cases, you do not need to give up your current nationality to become a British citizen. However, you should check the laws of your home country to ensure that it allows dual citizenship.

  • What happens if my application for British citizenship is refused?

    If your application for British citizenship is refused, you may have the right to administratively review the decision or apply again. You should speak to us for guidance on how to challenge your refusal.

  • What are Windrush Applications?

    The Windrush Scheme was implemented to respond to the wrongful consequences that people faced from not having documents to demonstrate settlement or right of abode. Commonwealth citizens, their children, and other long-term residents who do not have proof of their indefinite leave to remain or right of abode in the UK may be entitled to apply for proof of status free of charge if they are:

    - a commonwealth citizen who settled in the UK before 1 January 1973, or had the right of abode;
    - the child of a commonwealth citizen who settled in the UK before 1 January 1973, or had the right of abode, provided the child was born or arrived in the UK before the age of 18 or;
    - a person who settled in the UK from any country before 31 December 1988.

    If this applies to you, you may also be able to apply for citizenship for free, with an exemption from the Life in the UK and English Language test. There is a Windrush helpline to provide immigration support and you may be able to pursue compensation through the Windrush Compensation Scheme if you have suffered losses.
